Inlagd Sill - Scandinavian Pickled Herring

Ingredients

  • Servings: 6
  • 2 salted herrings
  • 2/3 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 5 peppercorns, crushed
  • 2 tablespoons onions, minced

Recipe

  • 1 soak herring overnight.
  • 2 drain; skin and remove all bones.
  • 3 mix vinegar, pepper, sugar, crushed peppercorns and pour over herring.
  • 4 if the vinegar is very strong, dilute with water.
  • 5 let stand for a few hours.
  • 6 when serving, cut into 1/2 inch wide strips diagonally across fish and arrange on a dish to look like a whole fillet.
  • 7 garnish with minced onion.
